The Deluge!

Friday, 18 September, 2026 - 10:00 am

What was G-d thinking?

I mean, second day Rosh Hashana, the day for the grand Shofar blowing — something that the first day of Rosh Hashana didn’t have due to being superseded by Shabbat — and a deluge seldom experienced before in Westport.

Flash flood warnings ringing off the hook, multiple closed roads, wet basements and then more flash flood warnings — not quite the recipe for robust Synagogue participation, to say the least!

This was the hand of G-d if there ever was one.

For some, access was restricted and challenged, for others it was somewhat smoother sailing.

I don’t profess to know what the Divine intent for the timing of this deluge was, but I found it quite inspiring when one distressed congregant who was unable attend was informed by another who was able to attend ,”I was praying on your behalf — I had you covered”

One nation. fused together in so many ways. The Rebbe often emphasizing this point. The Jewish nation is like one body that consists of different limbs. Regardless of where we live or who we are - we each compliment the other to create one whole organism. The feet transporting the head and the fingers assisting the eyes.

Likewise, the lack of a limb affects the entire body and pain in a toenail affects concentration. Interconnection with totality.

How beautiful! Am Yisrael — ONE entity. Disparate and independent in the external but bound as one at the core.

Could this have been the Divine Plan?

I’ll be the first to admit that my vision of Divine reasoning is, limited to naught. Mortals can simply not understand the Divine. It’s impossible. It’s beyond the grasp of the finite mind. Yet the goalposts of the Divine plan have been clearly set out for us in the Torah.

But wait. Another thing I know with certainty — from Gd’s clear messaging to us. G-d loves the Jewish nation and will certainly seal us all for a “good” year. We need only to place our trust in the Almighty and we’d see it in real time which after all, is the greatest proof of all!!

With best wishes for a Gmar Chatima Tova — may you and your family be sealed for a great year in all aspects of your lives — Shabbat Shalom!
